Common Name: Tohono Oˊodham Devilˊs Claw
Oˊodham Name: iˊhug   Audio
Group: Crop Plants - Crop Plants

Description
This is the cultivated Tohono O'odham Devilˊs Claw. It's purple flower reveals its relationship with the native plant, Proboscidea parviflora. Another native species of Devils Claw with a yellow flower is the smaller Ban Iˊhug, or Proboscidea althaeifolia. All aspects of Ban Iˊhug are substantially larger than those of it's smaller, yellow-flowered cousin. The cultivated fruits reach 12 inches or more in length, and are shredded lengthwise to create lovely black threads used in Tohono Oˊodham basketry.
